Dalgety Bay is a coastal town in Scotland which looks out over the Firth of Forth towards the city of Edinburgh and the three famous bridges. The song imagines a love story and a young woman who is faced with a difficult choice.

Lyrics

She looked out on Dalgety Bay
To the lights of the city
So wondrous and pretty
But it was down by the bridge that she strayed
Where she met a young soldier
Who stole her away

Away from the comforts of home
Hearts filled with hunger and dreams
Barely a woman and he
Promising all that can be
Not even a thought for the sight she could see when

She looked out on Dalgety Bay
To the lights of the city
So wondrous and pretty
But it was down by the bridge that she strayed
Where she met a young soldier
Who stole her away

Away from that same trodden road
Embracing the fancy and free
Dismissing the urge to concede
How she's deep down lamenting the sea
So she closes her mind to the sight she could see when

She looked out on Dalgety Bay
To the lights of the city
So wondrous and pretty
But it was down by the bridge that she strayed
Where she met a young soldier
Who stole her away

Now her soldier boy's gone off to war
And she sits all alone with her dreams
Her thoughts are of walks by the shore
And the smell of the sea as she breathes
As she opens her mind to the sight she could see when

When she looked out on Dalgety Bay
To the lights of the city
So wondrous and pretty
But it is down by the bridge that she'll stray
Where she met a young soldier who stole her away
Now she's sorry young soldier, but she's leaving today

So she can look out on Dalgety Bay
And it's there in her heart that she'll stay
Now not even a soldier can steal her away
